La Fin d'un Amour

This blog is currently on an indefinite hiatus while lunatoic and myself work on the plans for something bigger and better.

Ciaossu!

Lovers in Japan

Was going to post a WIP for this (still have the file!) but forgot about it, and by the time I remembered, the pic was finished xD

OMG blogger resized it horribly D:

Actually two old old original characters of mine that.. don't really look like how I pictured them...

Oh I'm back on deviantART by the way ;D Check me out at http://lunatoic.deviantart.com/! (and support a poor homeless Xboxless artist ;_; )

Breakfast: Father vs. Me

Nothing tastes so good as an imminent heart attack. I'm not saying light and healthy is tasteless and bland but you've got to admit that most things fried in oil and doused in salt will do their best to appeal to your tastebuds.

After a dream in which I did the very same thing, I got up this morning and made myself an omelette with 2 eggs, salt and cheddar cheese. Ahaha, I even dream about food.

Sure, it's not the most whacked out, unhealthy thing I've ever eaten - not like fried Coke or anything that crazy - but for someone who had been restricting themself to 1 egg a day (...long story, I'll explain one day) 2 eggs is a big step. Actually, wait...not as big a step as the day we went to Mornington and I ate something like 5 of the little bastards.

I folded it into thirds and it ended up being this little thing. :3
Cheese: *oozes*

I added some water so that it would be tender. I don't like looking after things as they cook so sometimes me eggs can get a bit tough. Tough for eggs, that is, so something akin to tofu. Not, you know, rubber.

My father, on the other hand, produced the above monstrosity and kindly asked of me to eat it. What is it, you ask? Very good question. That is his interpretation of what Westerners eat. Diarrhoea, you say? No. 'Soup'/'gruel'/'torture.'

It's a heady mix of sweet potato, unprocessed oats, butter and cream (and maybe some salt - just because Dad seasons stuff like that: sporadically.) Yeah, because Westerners eat butter and cream with everything. Good gods.

I had a bowl. I was obliged to do so. -___-

Let me clarify: Dad cooks wonderfully - he does all the cooking at home. I'm not saying he's some catastrophe in the kitchen but he certainly does have some odd preconceptions. He goes from amazing, mouth-watering dishes to peculiar renditions of something he's had in his mind for a while. Usually it's when he moves from Asian to Western cuisine. Those preconceptions? The weirdest, grossest things. I shan't elaborate but let's just say that he does "Western" dishes like a child who has seen something tasty in a foreign cookbook and is trying to duplicate it using ingredients of a similar colour, texture and his very vivid imagination.

The fallout. ;w;

Pleasures other than eating

Now that the days are sunny and warm, I sun myself (cat-style) on the back verandah.

Spidey on a web after a little drizzle.

View looking upwards from my resting place. ;)

The sky was this amazing blue today. Too bright for me too look at for too long a time. Nice contrast with our dead tree, though. Poor dead tree. :( Still, it gives the cockatoos something to gnaw on.

A shrub grown massive. I would be nice under it if only our lawn were more lush. :(

The nice other tree. The water-sapper. :( The lawn's all dry under it.

-insert the sound of cicadas here- *naps*

Mornington

This was the shortest stretch of prettiness I had ever seen. I thought beach suburbs were supposed to be picturesque?

The colour made me a little hungry...

Some massive boat (the big one, duh) that belonged to some accounting firm. Really forget the name now...
The one with the green flag took people out into the bay to fish. The one with the red stuff on the roof was selling fresh oysters for cheap.

Hey guy, I wasn't stalking you, honest!

It's a congregation of all things 'seasidey': boats, bay and a massive Fish and Chippery.

I just thought it was a creepy rock, but it turned out that there were birdies on it. ._. They were so far away that the first shot was just a blur (shake, hands, shake.)

Strawbellies

gawd it's been a while.
I don't even like strawberries to be honest. Too sour. Artificial strawberry flavouring is more my thing. ;D

It's a date!

lunatoic, pancakesoda and I are going out especially to eat Domino's 8 Meats pizza sometime at the end of this week. ;D

Gosh, could they have put more meat on this thing?

Oh yum yum yum. Nothing says 'yummy' like 'this much closer to a heart attack.' 8D

Viva la Música!

No art today. Inspiration, maybe. ;D For all those I haven't rec'd this to yet, this is one of the most entertaining examples of typography I've ever seen:

Cuarteto de Nos - Ya No Sé Que Hacer Conmigo

Been toasting marshmallows over candles for the past two days. Great fun! I'm sure all this carbon can't be good for me, but who cares. I mean c'mon! Marshmallows!

Go-Fish

Not the game, apparently.

Since the weather was pretty nice today, my parents and I went on a daytrip to Mornington Peninsular. To Dad's chagrin, there wasn't a McDonald's near where we'd parked the car. Woe. Woe. He wouldn't eat Asian either (Chinese, Japanese, Thai...) and I didn't want to eat Cafe food (carbohydrate overdose would result in me being really, really sleepy. So sleepy in the warm sunshine? I think not...) so we decided to settle for Fish and Chips at this place called Go-Fish (or Go-Fishing...).

Goodness knows why since I used to work at a fish and chippery and know all the goings on behind the counter - not that you couldn't guess anyway.

My old workplace and this joint are both run by Asians (surprise, surprise) and, seeing as they'd just opened, the food was pretty nice.

We got a few blue grenadier (I love this fish to bits :F), calamari rings, chips, coleslaw and an onion. I wanted to get a burger but it would have taken ages for the grill to heat up and all that jazz. >_< Boo. Boo. Who eats deep fried fish anyway?

The blue gren. was fresh and delish, tender and meat separated into firm flakes. Gah. Chips were chips. Coleslaw was nice and fresh and not too much mayo, which was a nice change from that sodden crap from Coles.

Afterwards I was too full to contemplate moving much. Even in trying to avoid carbohydrate overdose, I couldn't help myself. -___-;;

Anyway, even though it was all nice and stuff, I would consider (deeply) my choices next time I'm faced with F&C. Honestly, potatoes aren't my thing and I don't like deep fried shit so...I really shouldn't be eating it!

And this is what happens when I eat at home for a few days...nothing exciting in my world of food. :( I resort to talking about fast food for goodness' sake. >_<

ARGH

GUESS WHO FORGOT TO SAVE

Too lazy to pick up a pen

Went to Yo's summer seminar today, where they were in the midst of reviewing a case study. Suffice to say that most of the general law-ness went over my head (though the autopsy reports were interesting...and gross), but I did at least get something out of it:

the highlight of which I'm sure you'll all agree is this

... yeah. You'll have to ask Yo about that one.

Yoyogi

I love this place. It's my eatery if all else fails and often enough when they don't.

211-213 Swanston St, Melbourne

In the heart of the CBD, as realtors might say, situated near the entrance of Chinatown and sandwiched between Claypot King (that's a story for another day) and Crown Cafe Bakery (nice cakes, apparently, but the one time I got something from there I also came down with gastro...) this place has the freshest, tastiest Japanese food for student prices. I've pretty much had everything on their menu - that's how much I love eating there.

My friends and I went down the other day and ate:

Agedashi Tofu

We watched the benito shavings do their creepy curling up and moving around thing for a while. Kinda fun. :) The tofu was really tender and yummy. ;___;

Gyoza

I love pan-fried dumplings. :F Steamed dumplings are healthy and all but...missing the crispy outer shell. Not in-your-face meaty, so that was nice. Well, depends what you feel like.

Okonomiyaki

I don't love okonomiyaki so I really don't know what to say. It was nice, though. I'd eat it again. A bit burnt but the crispiness was nice.

Ramen with seasonal vegetables

Well, this wasn't mine and I only ate the bamboo shoots that came with it. Nonetheless, those were some nice bamboo shoots. ;D

Cha Soba

Yeah...don't worry, you actually get more soba than that but I was too hungry and forgot to take the photo until after I had decimated what came in the bowl. That sprig of coriander was a nice touch, thanks to the okonomiyaki dish. I love soba. This green tea flavour wasn't too flash - I couldn't really taste it - but the buckwheat one is really good. I suggest getting the soba with a side dish or ordering this and an entree because, well, a meal isn't a meal without meat. ;D

My friend has this thing she does in Japanese restaurants to test their skill. She always orders an oyakodon at every new Jap. place she finds to see how they make it. I forget what she said about Yoyogi's oyakodon but I decided to eat it one day. Not bad. Quite good, actually, but the serving was too large for me. I'm more one for smaller but a greater variety of dishes when I eat.

Other dishes of note:

Unagi Don - Japanese-style eel on rice (with miso soup) is the best thing I've ever eaten. The eel is so incredibly tender and tasty I almost cried when it was gone.
The ramen with narutos in - sorry, I really forget what this was called but it had kim-chi, takoyaki and naruto slices on top. It was good and spicy for a freezing winter.
Tonkatsu Ramen - this was the first dish I ever ate at Yoyogi's. I still remember because I couldn't believe that I was eating something this good that hadn't been made by some friend's parent.
Any and all of the bentos - lots of varied little dishes and a cup of miso to fill you up. They give you a taste of some of the entrees.

Everything on the menu is incredibly edible. Move beyond the sushi and dimsim front and go and take a seat at the back. Even better - upstairs.

Keep an eye peeled for the chef with the hair dyed a brilliant, clown red.

A Good Year

I'm currently reading Peter Mayle's A Good Year after watching the film with Russell Crowe in it. Why am I reading it? Well, for the food, wine and women, of course! ;D

And the fact that this is a nice break from all that dystopia.

Oh, and the hilariousness of the characters.

By this time, Christie was anaesthetized. She had arrived at that stage of overeating reached by certain species prior to hibernation and was barely capable of movement or thought, conscious only of an instinct to curl up in a quiet, dark place.

It's great stuff that goes quite well with this balmy weather we've been having lately.

And the film's not half bad, either. It's worth the watch - beautiful Marion Cotillard is in it. ;D
